it doesn't matter if you get left because they got into a stupid accident, or they were kidnapped and murdered, or because they just got up and had a mental decision to up and betray your marriage and their promise to care for you always..
however it happened or happens, you need to be prepared.
FIRST THINGS FIRST, you need to make sure you have your OWN separate bank account.
If your honey is in charge of ALL the money, I am sorry but that is the worst thing you can do for yourself.
If you are like me, and hate dealing with paperwork and accounts, I get it.. I really do.. But the worst thing my spouse could have done for me is to take care of ALL the money and then up and leave me to figure it all out.
The BEST thing your honey can do, is to put every utility in your name. ALL The utilities. For every investment he/she makes, he/she should also make an account with same firm in YOUR name too.
And after all the bills and expenses have been paid, 1/2 of the remainder should be put into YOUR private account for you to spend/save/invest how you please. now remember if you invest, it would also be good to make two accounts with the same investment firm so that you can hand him/her one in a divorce and keep the other. (oh, and give them the one that made more, just be nice that way, it's good karma) and remember ANY money you make, it's half theirs. so, make sure you go and create an account just for them to dump that money into.

btw, if you do not know which bank to make your own private account in, I would like to recommend to you my favorite one because they are a much more ethical bank then all the rest and because they have a higher APR then all the rest. . If you know of other banks that are ethical and have high APR's please let me know in comments below. oh, but hey when you sign up with Aspirations, they will also donate some money both in your name and in mine to the causes of our choices. :)
